This catalogue includes biographies of the various artists represented as well as some supplementary art, with 14 pages of colour plates. With the exception of the published work of Professor Bernard Smith and limited attention in academic circles, the role of Australian art within social and political contexts is a tradition that has attracted scant research. This exhibition, the result of an exhaustive study by the guest curator Charles Merewether is therefore one of special significance in bringing to an attention the role of the artist as a social and political commentator. -- Edmund Capon
