The revival of interest in Erté`s work from 1913 to the present began with an exhibition at the Grosvenor Gallery in London and New York in 1967. At the time, John Canady in the New York Times described Erté as `an Aubrey Beardsley who mastered the Foxtrot and occasionally broke into the Charleston.` Ernestine Carter in the London Sunday Times summed up this curious meeting of time past and time present: `It is not just the reminder of the sumptuous past which makes Erté so interesting. It is his re- markable affinity with the present. The Black Bottom costume of 1927 might have come from any Cardin collection. The `Dance Madness` fringe of 1925 swayed a sequinned hula at Lanvin ... and the design for a patterned stock- ing of 1919 foreshadowed the reality by over forty years.
Erté`s talents and diligence are represented by a working career which began as a dress designer with Poiret in 1913 and continues today with contributions to fashion magazines. His first theatrical task was a costume for Mata Hari in 1913-his latest, to date, for Zizi Jeanmaire at the Casino de Paris in 1970. He has made unique contributions to the French Music-hall, to Broadway, to Hollywood, to the legitimate stage, and to some of the great opera houses of the world. He has designed clothes, fabrics, shop window displays, perfume bottles, posters, jewelry, furniture, chocolate boxes, playing cards, restaurants, and domestic interiors-all with the skill and modesty of a dedicated profes- sional. Whatever the task, it has always been undertaken and completed with the same pains- taking, exquisite care, no matter what the sub- ject or the purpose. And at an age when most men have retired, in his seventies, he took up first metal sculpture and later lithography. Erté himself collaborated on this lavish volume.`
