Šta je istorija umetnosti

From being the dilettante`s hobby, art history has become a highly skilled and professional discipline, but a discipline that still needs flair, judgment and aesthetic perception. Mark Roskill shows how it evolved, explaining the methods and techniques which the art historian employs today, and using as examples some of the more intriguing `case histories` of the last fifty years, including the Brancacci Chapel, in which the problem was to separate the hands of three painters; the work of Piero della Francesca, which had to be identified before the personality of the artist could emerge; Giorgione, which involved cutting through accumulated myth and legend; some enigmatic works of Vermeer and Velasquez which meant tackling the riddle of concealed meanings in art; Van Meegeren and the whole problem of forgery; and finally Picasso`s Guernica, which shows how the historical method can elucidate a modern painting. Mark Roskill, himself a teacher, writes for the student and the interested layman, and imparts the excitement of the art historian when on the track of a discovery.
