The album is devoted to Russian portrait painting of the late 19th—early 20th centuries. The reproductions included make it possible to introduce the readet to the creative activity of artists who worked in the portrait genre, to trace its development in the course of three decades: from the middle of the 1880s up to the Great October Revolution. Short articles that preceed the reproductions contain the artist`s biographies in brief, information about the persons portrayed, details of the creation of the portrait.
The portrait genre is closer than any other connected with the previous artistic heritage of the 17th—19th centuries Russian art. The portrait of the turn of the century varies in form, stylistic peculiarities, means of expression.
I. Repin, V. Surikov, V. Serov, M. Vrubel, K. Somov, K. Korovin,
M. Nesterov, F. Maliavin, S. Maliutin, N. Feshin, B. Kustodiev, K. PetrovVodkin, A. Yakovlev, B. Grigoryev, I. Brodsky this is but a full list of names of portrait painters of 1880s—1890s.
Portrait painting was greatly influenced by outdoor painting. The works by Serov, Korovin, Repin and some others betray a wish to go beyond the conventional limits of portrait, to connect the model with its surrounding by a common mood, to penetrate it with light and air. One can clearly see in them the features typical of the painting of that time: inclination for a generalized, synthetic, picture-like presentation of the image, for a natural and dynamic portrayal, for a pure and bright palette. Colour becomes one of the most important factors of the emotional effect of the image, it develops indis vidual features and inner state of the portrayed. Besides the works by Repin and Serov, one can consider the portraits by Vrubel, Somov, Korovin and Maliavin to be major works of the 1890s. The next decade produced such noted portrait painters as Maliutin, Nesterov, Kustodiev, Feshin, and Serebriakova.
Proceeding from the achievements of the past, the artists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries wished to increase the emotional influence of their works, to make the classical language of painting sharper and expressive. From the end of the 1900s the search for the pictural form becomes more active. It is noteworthy that a number of masters turned to icon-painting and folk arts, to Oriental arts, to contemporary Western painting. Now they increasingly often use the techniques of grotesque, hyperbolization, deformation. The decorative element becomes more pronounced. Such are some works by the Moscow masters: Mashkov, Konchalovsky, Lentulov, Falk. St. Petersburg artists representatives of the so-called neoclassicism - considered the fineness of line to be of paramount importance.
Portraits by Altman, Khodasevich and Grigoryev are worth mentioning. In the works by Petrov-Vodkin contemporary features lives side by side with the tradition of ancient Russian painting and the art of early Renaissance. In the period considered quite a few graphic portraits were done in pencil, water-colours, gouache, sanguine. Some of them are reproduced in the album.
The authors Irina Pruzhan and Valentina Kniazeva are art historians, research workers of the Leningrad Russian Museum, experts in the Russian art of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Most of their publications are devoted to the artists who worked at the turn of the century.
