`One of a rare breed of artist - the neon artist, whose canvas is the night illuminated by a magic crayon of brilliant and sinuous, liquid light - Lili Lakich is also the founder and director of the world`s only museum dedicated to this extraordinary art form, the Museum of Neon Art in Los Angeles. Lakich`s own neon sculptures, created over a period of twenty years, have brought expressiveness to a medium sometimes considered cold and commercial. Often highly charged with emotion and monumental in size, they are like jewels salvaged from the modern world, transformed into icons of glistening beauty made all the more startling by their garnish orgins.`
Developed in France in 1910 by Georges Claude following pioneer research by Nikola Tesla and others in the late 1800`s, neon was confined to the advertisements of the sign industry from the late 1920`s through the mid 1950`s. As plastic signs illuminated by fluorescent bulbs became popular, the use of neon declined, and it wasn`t until the 1960`s that artists, including Lakich, began experimenting with the medium. Neon is now experiencing a renaissance as its beauty, liveliness and versatility are being rediscovered.
Neon Lovers Glow in the Dark traces Lakich`s inspiration and development as a neon artist through Lakich`s own narrative, illustrations, photos and color plates. It is a highly personal document by one of the pioneers of neon art.



Born in 1944, Lili Lakich began working with neon in 1966 while still a student at New York`s Pratt Institute College of Art. Bored by traditional painting, sculpture and graphic arts techniques, she realized that what really interested her were the roadside attractions and neon signs of motels and truck stops that are an integral part of America`s landscape. As her family crisscrossed the country by automobile in the 1950`s due to her father`s military career, they looked forward to the Burma Shave signs by day and the elaborate, animated motel signs by night.
Lakich visited a local sign company in 1966 to salvage scraps of neon tubing and discarded transformers for her first sculpture. Since then, her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums in the United States, Europe, and Japan. In 1981, Lili Lakich founded the Museum of Neon Art (MONA) in Los Angeles in order to exhibit, document and preserve neon, electric and kinetic art forms rarely seen by the public, including some of the neon signs which inspired her own love for the medium.
Along with her career as a neon artist, Lakich is an accomplished art director having designed key art campaigns for motion pictures, corporate advertising, posters, book and record album covers, and commercial signs.
Lili Lakich lives in Los Angeles and continues to carry the torch for her first love, neon.
