To the reader: `The object and scope of this work are still, in the words of the preface to the first edition, `an attempt... on the lines of Willis`s Dictionary of the Flowering Plants and Ferns, to give a list of all the generic names of Fungi.... For every genus a systematic position is given, together with the distribution and number of its species. There are in addition short accounts of the chief Families, Orders, and Classes of Fungi and of the Bacteria and Lichens; explanations of words used in mycology; the common and scientific names of important fungi; and other details of interest to systematic and to applied mycologists and plant pathologists`. In other words, an attempt is made to reflect the current state of mycological knowledge and practice and if with successive editions the mirror has become more highly polished the scope and complexity of mycology have increased so that the image is still very imperfect. Users of this dictionary are again urged to verify, whenever possible, the facts to which clues are given and to draw their own conclusions. Although the present edition closely resembles the previous on in format more than five thousand corrections or alterations have been made to the text of the fourth edition, much new material has been added, and a new set of illustrations prepared.`
