O. Henry - Best Stories of O. Henry
Garden City Books, New York, 1945
340 str.
tvrdi povez
stanje: dobro-, otpis iz biblioteke, Ex-library, No Jacket.

With An Introduction by Bennett A. Cerf and Van Cartmell

To say that these are the `best` stories of O. Henry may be considered editorial temerity, but it can be said without reservation that they represent O. Henry at his best. The editors made one essential attribute their criterion of choice -- entertainment value. Except for space limitations, the list of selections could have been expanded almost indefinitely, for O. Henry`s appeal is universal. He lived in many parts of the United States, varying in locale from a Texas ranch to New York City, and his observation and keen insight into the characters of people he encountered enabled him to write with deep feeling and understanding. When he writes of Texas, a Texan will recognize the spirit and flavor of his own country and the same may be said of any section of the country that O. Henry visited. Perhaps the most notable characteristics of O. Henry`s writing are the amazing ingenuity of his plots, the incisive brevity of his stories and his somewhat adventurous choice of words. The 38 stories in this collection include The Gift of the Magi, A Cosmopolitan in a Cafe, Man About Town, The Cop and the Anthem, The Love-Philtre of Ikey Schoenstein, Mamman and the Archer, Springtime a la Carte, From the Cabby`s Seat, An Unfinished Story, The Romance of a Busy Broker, The Furnished Room, Roads of Destiny, The Enchanted Profile, The Passing of Black Eagle, A Retrieved Reformation, The Renaissance at Charleroi, Shoes, Ships, The Hiding of Black Bill, The Duplicity of Hargraves, The Ransom of Red Chief, The Marry Month of May, The Whirligig of Life, A Blackjack Bargainer, A Lickpenny Lover, The Defeat of the City, Squaring the Circle, Transients in Arcadia, The Trimmed Lamp, The Pendulum, Two Thanksgiving Day Gentlemen, The Making of a New Yorker, The Lost Blend, A Harlem Tragedy, A Midsummer Knight`s Dream, The Last Leaf, The Count and the Wedding Guest, and A Municipal Report.
