`This is the story of Plevna-a little Bulgarian town of no conceivable consequence in itself, which, for a brief moment in history, caught the imagination of newspaper readers throughout the civilized world.

This is the story of the intrepid corps of international war correspondents who galloped to the sound of guns, reporting, over crackling wires, this antique but terrible war to millions
in every city of the civilized world. Never before has a war been so fully described; never will it be again; for after 1877 the hand of the censor clamped down on eye-witness accounts.

This is the story of the heroic defense of Plevna by the Turks, led by Osman Pasha, and the no less heroic failure of the Russians to take it by storm.

This is the story, too, of a strange camaraderie born of the war between an American, an Englishman, and a Russian-one an officer, the others war correspondents.

Mr. Furneaux has done an amazing piece of work in re-creating this romantic but bloody battle, bringing it vividly to life. The book is illustrated with many drawings and maps of the period.

Rupert Furneaux, the author of The Breakfast War, was born in South Wales in 1908, and he, his wife, and their eleven-year-old daughter now live in Hants, England. Besides his career as a writer of books, he also wrote and directed for motion pictures. He has many interests, chief among them being the origins of Christianity, historical mysteries, the lives and experiences of war correspondents, and true crime and murder cases.`
