My Life on the Plains
BY GENEKAL GEORGE CUSTER
EDITED BY KENNETH FENWICK WITH EARLY PHOTOGRAPHS
George Armstrong Custer’s last stand at the battlc of the Little Big Horn has been immortalised in horse-operas without number; and the panache with which he met his end was a fitting curtain to a spectacular career. Custer fought in the Civil War, was a major-general at twenty-five, and became one of the greatest cavalry commanders of all time. My Life on the Plains is the record of his Indian campaigns between 1867 and 1869, during that second, equally desperate civil war when the ancient tribes of the Sioux, the Cheyenne and the Comanche defended their hunting lands against the pioneer frontiersmen from the East who came in urgent search for land and gold. Custer’s own account of his exploits in that stirring, dangerous, thrusting period of expansion is as fiamboyant and fiery, as hard-bitten and autocratic as the man himself.
