Prominent Dissidents from the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe Weigh the Gorbachev Policy of Openness
A Discussion moderated by Leonard R. Sussman
Two roundtable discussions, the first with a group of prominent Soviet dissidents now in emigration, the second with East European dissidents and American scholars of East European origin. Leonard Sussman, the moderator, asks many questions, about Gorbachev, reform and change, which are pertinent but, at this stage, not subject to precise answers. The result is a mélange of ideas, opinions, obiter dicta and unstructured conversation, not without interest because of the special knowledge and past experience of the participants. As might be expected, the prevailing view of the Soviet reforms is skeptical.
