`Primarily this is a book about language: language and politics, language and the future of literature, the pressures on language of totalitarian lies and cultural decay, language and other codes of meaning - music, translation, mathematics - language and silence.

As they appeared in England, the United States, France and eastern Europe, these essays made readers aware of George Steiner`s urgent and radical concern with the relations between language and the menacing quality of modern life, between communion and communication. `Night Words`-on pornography - and `The Hollow Miracle` - on the role of Nazism in the history of the German language - provoked sharp controversy on their first appearance and have continued to be widely discussed. Other essays, such as `The Retreat from the Word; raise issues of profound philosophic importance and have already passed into general awareness. `Silence and the Poet` poses a challenge to the very notion of literature.

George Steiner`s unique quality is that his writing is based on the intense commitment of personal feeling. on `risks of the heart` as well as on brilliance of intellect. This volume, therefore, will be of lasting value to those who are concerned about the relations between humanism, the idea of literate communication and the present course of history.`
