`Is literature a unique mode of human action? Or can it help to interpret fiction, poetry and drama as institutional forms with a history, as sociologists have tried to interpret law, myth, ideology and political and economic theories?

Since the great debate over the Marxist interpretation of literature as essentially a form of ideology based upon and reflecting the structure of society, the sociological study of literature has enjoyed a vigorous development in Europe. Until recently, however, it has received little serious attention in the English-speaking world.

In their Introduction Elizabeth and Tom Burns note that `the 1960s were marked, in sociology, by the breakdown of the hegemony established by functionalism... and the emergence of a healthy pluralism. One of the more active lines of development is a concern with `making sense of the ways we try to make sense of our lives` rather than with trying to make sense of our lives by indirect instrumental means after the fashion of natural scientists.` They argue that there is now a conjunction between at least the intentions of some literary critics and of some sociologists. In this volume they have collected Readings, many of them appearing in translation for the first time, which explore this area of common interest and provide a new, distinctive and valuable development in both sociology and literary studies.`
