Architecture of the Islamic World: Its History and Social Meaning / edited George Michell

London, Velika Britanija 1987. Tvrd povez, zaštitni omot, engleski jezik, bogato ilustrovano, veliki format (28 cm), 288 strana.
Knjiga je odlično očuvana.

Here is a panoramic survey of the entire field of Islamic architecture, from mosques to markets, from citadels to cemeteries, with the emphasis upon function and meaning rather than on chronology and style. Although Islamic buildings make an immediate impact by their monumental forms, rich colours and profuse ornament, they cannot be truly understood without knowing something of the society which they serve — its religion, its power structure, its commerce, its communal life. The architecture associated with each of these social areas is examined by the authors — the mosques, madrasas and mausolea with their complex rituals and activities; the palaces, citadels and fortific-
ations created by those in positions of authority; the markets and caravanserais of the world of trade and travel; and the humbler vernacular architecture of town and village with its numerous regional variations. Building materials, techniques, and principles of decoration are also described and explained and there is a comprehensive inventory of the key buildings of the Islamic world.
The seven authors are all specialists in their subjects, whose work is firmly based on extensive original research.

`This ambitious volume, well planned and of impeccable layout . . . a text packed with information has much to intrigue the specialist but it should also be required reading for all students of Islamic art and can be highly recommended to the interested layman`
British Book News

`A richly rewarding book . . . almost a score of writers make expert contributions . . . magnificently illustrated`
House and Garden

`Puts the wings on my heels`
Jan Morris, The Times
