64471) Velaskez monografija na engleskom Velazquez , Joseph Emile Muller , Thames and Hudson London 1976 , World of Art Library ;
About this book
One of the most significant painters of the seventeenth century, Diego Velázquez, was born in Seville in 1599. Apprenticed in Pacheco`s academy in 1613, he was by the age of eighteen already established as an artist of prodigious talents. Five years later, in 1623, he became painter to the Spanish court. His output was comparatively small, and his paintings tended to be low-keyed and subdued in colour, without the flamboyant energy of Rubens and the other Baroque painters of allegories. His great-ness emerges above all from the gravity and intensity of observation with which he portrays all his subjects, from popes and kings to dwarfs and paupers, and in the profound feeling for humanity which underlies all his work. Amid all the pomp and artifice of the Court, Velázquez concerned himself with human dignity and human suffering. His most famous works-from the Tapestry Weavers and Royal Family (Las Meninas), now in Madrid, to the Old Woman Frying Eggs in Edinburgh and the first female nude in Spanish art, the Rokeby Venus now in London-bring out in addition his powerful delight in virtuosity. It was his unsurpassed skill in rendering light, atmosphere and colour that led a nineteenth-century Impressionist, Manet, to give him perhaps his most enduring epithet: `the painters` painter`.

Joseph-Emile Muller
was born in 1911 in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. As director of the educational department of the Musée de l`Etat in Luxembourg since 1945, he has mounted numerous exhibitions and given hundreds of lectures. His first published art criticism dates from 1934. He is the author of Fauvism (in `The World of Art Library`) and co-author with Frank Elgar of A Century of Modern Painting.
