49 Self-portrait with Dr Arrieta
`Goya, one of the greatest Spanish painters, was essentially a man of his time, yet his work is as poignantly relevant now as when it was first created in the turbulent Europe of Napoleon. Goya comments freely, savagely, satirically, on his fellow beings; even as a court painter he portrayed the Spanish royal family exactly as he saw them and no hint of flattery clouded his vision. At the height of his success he became gravely ill. When he recovered, not only was he permanently deaf, but the experience of having barely cheated death left him a profoundly changed man. His work reflected this. With the French invasion of Spain, the cruelty and stupidity of war became his theme, recorded with particular savagery in the engravings, The Disasters of War. Later he retreated in disillusion to the country where he tried to exorcise his bitterness in the famous `black paintings`. In old age sweetness and light returned and this again is apparent in his work. The introduction and plate notes eloquently reveal the man, his life and his work. The forty-nine colour plates handsomely illustrate the phases of Goya`s art from his early fashionable brilliance to his despairing yet compassionate portrayals of human crime and folly.`
