`Genuine African art comes almost exclusively from south of the Sahara Desert. Most people of the west have seen it only in museums or photographs. But for the makers of the artefacts, their meaning lies in the part they play in the ceremonies for which they are created and in which they are related to the kindred arts of music, dancing and poetry. In a museum these wonderful creations are seen in an alien environment so it is hardly surprising that there are profound differences between the African and the western approaches towards them. To the African in a traditional society, who made them and who uses them, they are part of a ceremony in which drumming, dancing, chanting and sacrificing play equally important roles. To people of the west, with their aura of religion, however unfamiliar in form, they are objects of contemplation. The author reveals the significance as well as the artistic quality of these works and the fifty-one colour plates show them in all their variety and splendour. Some interesting modern paintings ore also included.`
