`Rembrandt is a supreme example of a great artist misunderstood by his contemporaries. His life is like a Victorian moral tale - the early successes, the untimely death of his wife and his irregular life with his housekeeper forced on him by financial burdens, his increasing debts through extravagance, his gradual descent into the poverty and loneliness of his old age, culminating in the final catastrophe of the death of his beloved son Titus.

Something of all this can be seen in the famous series of self-portraits, that he painted throughout his life, in which we can see the confident young man becoming by turns disillusioned, careworn, saddened, at last resigned and always increasingly introspective. But if he painted himself with amazing insight, he was equally perceptive in his portraits of other people: so clearly is the character of the sitter laid down on the canvas that we feel we know exactly how they would think and talk and move.

In his mythological and biblical paintings, too, we find ourselves not so much looking at shadowy representations of legendary figures but actually in the presence of real people involved in real dramas. This lifelong preoccupation with human beings shines through even the merest sketch of an indulgent nurse encouraging a determined infant to take his first steps.

Christopher Wright, lecturer and writer on art now on the staff of the Witt Library at the Courtauld Institute of Art, London University, has. included some well-known paintings, etchings and drawings among the 101 illustrations, but many are seldom reproduced, and this, together with the sympathetic text, gives a welcome freshness to this introduction to one of the world`s greatest painters.`
