Nineteenth-Century American Painting: The Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection / Barbara Novak

Američko slikarstvo XIX veka

Njujork, SAD 1986. Tvrd povez, zaštitni omot, bogato ilustrovano, veliki format (30 cm), engleski jezik, 329 strana.
Knjiga je odlično očuvana.

Following international acceptance of Abstract Expressionism as the major art movement of our time, American painting of the nineteenth century has now come into its own as a full-blown reflection of Romanticism. Baron Thyssen spotted a trend ahead of its time and built one of the world`s most important collections in this field before the purchase of such masterpieces was limited to major museums. The publication of all the works in this great collection, for which Barbara Novak has written a substantial introduction, is a major event for scholars, collectors and all who have been touched by this period of American history and vision. Novak, the leading scholar in this field, provides a theoretical framework for looking at the paintings in the philosophical context of nineteenth-century American culture. The works of Thomas Cole and the luminists are seen in relation to Transcendentalism as embodied in the writings of Emerson and Thoreau; the later realism of Winslow Homer is seen in relation to the influence of Darwin and, throughout, the dominating influence of nature is seen as a major factor in influencing artists trained in European traditions to modify accepted solutions in a way that led to the development of a distinct national identity.
Barbara Novak`s essay is followed by a detailed and extensive catalogue of the 109 paintings by 55 artists, in which all the paintings in the collection are illustrated in colour. Also illustrated and described are 50 related paintings The notes on each painting incorporate meticulous original research by a group of young American scholars, and in addition provide provenance and exhibition information and an account of citations in previous literature. Brief biographies of the artists, again using new material and accompanied by a brief bibliography follow the catalogue section.
