This book takes the reader from the earliest manifestations of Christian art, in the catacombs of Rome, to the full splendour of the great Gothic cathedrals.
The thread is traced through the rich mosaics of Byzantine art (with its offshoots in the icons of eastern Europe and Russia), the illuminated manuscripts of Ireland and Northumbria, the uninhibited art of the barbarian invaders and the methodically exuberant decoration of Islamic architecture, all of which contributed to the art of the high Middle Ages. The West is seen to be linked, through the Middle and Near East, with India and south-east Asia, whose art at this time reached its climax in the vast temple groups, with the China of the Sung and Yuan Dynasties, and with the first independent art in Japan.
Each chapter has a section giving clearly and concisely the facts about all the arts architecture, sculpture, painting, ceramics, metalwork, textiles, etc. There is also a series of detailed essays by leading authorities, and each chapter begins with a penetrating text by one eminent art historian on the course of art over different areas and periods in relation to one another and to civilisation as a whole.
There is a large index, so that any fact artists, schools, styles, important works of art can easily be found. And welded to all these elements are over 1000 illustrations, 36 in full colour, and many maps, making this volume one of the most important and highly documented books on art ever published.
The main purpose of the book is to present art not on its own, but as one essential element of the continuous development of mankind, to show how it is affected by and affects the thinking, attitudes and way of life of a particular period and place. Art and mankind are indissolubly linked, and it is only by considering art in relation to mankind and not just as an interesting phenomenon entirely unconnected with `real life` and the ordinary man that the true nature of art, and also of man, can be fully understood.
