This book is aimed at engineers with expertise in the design, exploitation, investigation or maintenance of pumping systems and auxiliary hydraulic systems of hydro, thermal or nuclear power plants and also to users and manufacturers of systems. The importance of transients, for example waterhammer and vibrations, and their effects on safety and construction are highlighted. Pumping systems used in a variety of applications and parameters affecting transients and their regulation are assessed in the first three chapters. Data required for computations and their simulation and the design of systems and hydraulic machines are the subject of the next three chapters. The last three chapters deal with measurements to test safety aspects, leading to a recommended range of values for parameters which are then analysed. Appendex 1 discusses some advanced research studies of transient regimes, the second describes common regimes of pumping systems. (P.J.B.)
