The Production is a talky one that never works up the momentum to be the Big Backstage Drama which it intends. It mainly concerns the obsession of playwright Andrew Neal who wants total control over his property, "The Sad and Funny Death of My Mother," and the counter-vision of director Fred Casey who is trying to wrestle magnificence out of a sell-out mediocrity. This follows all the intricacies of putting a play together from early low-keyed lunches to high-powered rehearsals and culminates in Neal and Casey`s battle for the psyche of leading lady Merry Nelson, an actress who needs more direction off-stage than on. But the real motivation for the book and Neal is his subconscious desire to kill off his mother which is neither sad nor funny, only sheer clipboard boredom.
