One wonders whether The King might become a paperback prince but remain a hardcover pauper in spite of the strong publisher expectations. It`s a bi-i-i-g, sprawling backadaisical Hollywood nothing about guess who? Hints: Bronx boy becomes national idol as The Symbol, as the absolute ultimate singer of songs. When we meet Harry Orlando he has lived. He is now in search of respectability. And he is determined to get it...where else? In politics. Seems he was a buddy of the late President Joe Haywood and was slanted for a high post on the Cultural Exchange Program. But the new President ("everybody`s favorite zero" incidentally) is not so friendly. So now there`s nothing left but to climb on Grant Campbell`s bandwagon... and sing his charms. Campbell is the Senator from California with big ambitions. So through the campaign with many flashbacks of Harry`s past... parties...wives...poignant moments...broads...orgies. Real backstage claptrap. Stuff! Meanwhile there are political dirty doings and the climax comes when Harry learns about Campbell`s true Bircher-itis. Will Harry snap away his support on election eve? He does, in a beautiful Boy Scout speech: "I had this fruitcake dream of seeing myself become a big shot in my government and maybe helping somebody. To get there, I would`ve cuddled up with the devil. You know something? I did." Well we`ve learned one thing. Show Biz and politics just don`t mix. Not in this novel. It`s a bore. Sinatra sindicated, with a first release of 75,000.

Mr. Feinberg`s novel "The King," which he wrote under the name Morton Cooper, followed the political aspirations and sexual misadventures of Harry Orlando, a character rumored to have been based on Frank Sinatra. The book earned praised for its realistic dialogue and rich detail but was criticized for its stock characters and steamy plot.
