59607) BIOCHEMICAL ENGINEERING , Shuichi Aiba, Arthur Earl Humphrey, Nancy F. Millis, Academic Press New York/ London 1973 , Biohemijsko inženjerstvo ;
THE FIRST EDITION of this book was published in 1965 to provide a useful source book for workers in industry and a clear approach to biochemical engineering for students. It was written with the assumption that readers would have different backgrounds such as microbiology, chemical engineering, etc. In 14 chapters, this revised edition will provide bridges between the differences in the disciplines of biology and chemical engineering in the fermentation industry.
THE SECOND EDITION discusses in the introductory chapter the contribution of biochemical engineering from the point of view of production of useful material as well as from the aspect of pollution control. Two chapters on the characteristics of biological material and fermentation pathways aimed at helping chemical engineers appreciate the biological catalysts have been revised to shed more light onto biological mechanisms of control in the production of antibiotics, organic acids, polymers, etc. This edition also has extensive revisions of the sections on biological mechanisms of control, kinetics, scale-up and methods for the measurement and control of fermentation parameters, with special emphasis on the management and control of oxygen transfer. The new chapters deal with the environmental control, the recovery of cells, their disruption and frac tionation, and with the extraction and immobilization of macromolecules. In addition, summaries are included at the end of each chapter where the essential points will be emphasized.
THIS VOLUME will stimulate the interest of those engaged in both microbiology and chemical engineering and interested in exploiting the latent potentials of the microbial world.
