`Television language is mainly about familiarity; it`s built up through repetition of situations, gags, relationships, over weeks, months, years. We were faced with the need to create a language that would be surprising and entertaining...We began by inventing a number of video games...` That, in Albert Hunt`s own words, is what The Language of Television is about: it`s about the way that television, through massive and constant reinforcement, makes its own language the only language; and it`s about the attempts-instructive, hilarious, even occasionally quite touching - made by Hunt and his colleagues and students to discover other possible languages that television might use if it were more genuinely at the service of the people who pay for it.

In the first part of the book Hunt looks at the television we`ve got, contrasting the `official reality` of news and current affairs programmes with the anarchic view of the world put out by such as Morecambe and Wise and the two Ronnies. The second part contains accounts of three of Hunt`s collaborative video projects. In the third and most polemical part of the book, Hunt explores how far we still have to go towards a truly popular education. This is a book for all who are concerned with the self-limiting nature of our national television. It is also a superb `ideas book` for teachers and others who are interested in using video to do more than ape the regular diet of broadcast programmes.

Albert Hunt has been active in the area of learning through entertainment since 1960, working variously in Shropshire, Bradford, Europe and Australia. He is the author of Hopes for Great Happenings - Alternatives in Education and Theatre and a regular contributor to New Society and TES. The Language of Television stems from his time as Fellow in Television and Education for the Independent Broadcasting Authority.`
