`During the past ten years I have conducted many Extra- Mural courses on the African peoples for the universities of Glasgow and London. I have also given scores of individual lectures on the same subject. It has become increasingly common for students to ask me to recommend a simple outline book which provides the basic facts of the African continent. I have never been able to discover a satisfactory book of this kind; so I decided to write one myself.

I have based this little book on the series of lectures I have given, mostly to adult students. I have attempted to concentrate on those aspects of African problems which seem to have interested my students most, based on a factual foundation, and concentrating on British Africa. I hope that it may prove a useful introduction to a study of Africa for the rapidly increasing number of students of all ages whose interest is attracted towards that continent. Its object is no more than this.`
