The Rise of the Working Class

One of the main social changes brought about by the Industrial Revolution was the emergence of a new class of worker. For the first time in history there was a group of free men (as opposed to slaves) who worked with their hands but did not own the means of production. Unlike the journeymen and craftsmen of pre-industrial days the new workers who flocked to the towns possessed no tools of their own but competed with one another with their labour for jobs that the machine created.

After examining the technical inventions which caused this social revolution, Professor Kuczynski describes, with a wealth of judicious quotation from literary and historical sources of the period, exactly what conditions of life were like for the new urban proletariat: the uprooting of families, the poverty, the crowded squalor of factory and home – above all the lack of education which speeded the process of demoralisation and led to the gradual isolation of the working class from the rest of society. He shows how in time this very isolation created a self-awareness among the working class which led to the development of organised labour.

Jürgen Kuczynski, the doyen of historians of the working class, is known for a great number of books and articles on the subject. He is Director of the Institute for Economic History at the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin.

POPUSTI, CENKANJE I SL.:

SUSEDNE ZEMLJE I INOSTRANSTVO:
