"Fatherless Sons` was the first of his serious fictions to use an explicitly Canadian setting, and attempted to convey the political and personal experience of working-class Canadians in the early years of the Cold War. As the verbal echo in its title suggests, `Fatherless Sons` may have been partly inspired by the Communist reaction against Hugh MacLennan`s popular novel `Each Man`s Son` (1951). A reviewer in the Canadian Tribune complained that MacLennan ignored the poverty and strife-ridden labour conditions of industrial Cape Breton to concentrate on a sentimental and pseudopsychological scrutiny of the main character, `Fatherless Sons`, by contrast, portraysworking-class struggles for survival against capitalist exploitation and m ilitarism.` - from James Doyle`s article `Science, Literature and Revolution: The Life and Writings of Dyson Carter`, pp. 19-20, from Left History, Vol. 5, No. 2. `You`ll read in this book the story of a headstrong young miner, and the courageous woman whose love he never lost. This man`s family, for genearations, has been shadowed by a terrible curse... the sons have never known their fathers. Came the day when Dave Nelson returned from war, to seek his love again, resolved to defy his family`s fate. But life plunged him and his beloved into one of the strangest, most pathetic and tormenting situations that ever confronted two loves. `Fatherless Sons` takes you farrbeyond one family and one town. It sweeps you across our magnificent count ry, into the lives of a host of Canadians, youthful and aged, the brave andthe defeated.`
