Childhood is the first book of the autobiographical novel contemplated by L. N. Tol-stoi. It was to be entitled Four Epochs of Development.
L. Tolstoi was only able to complete three parts of the book: Childhood (1852); Boyhood (1854); and Youth (1857). The fourth part was never written.
Childhood tells the story of the early years of Nikolenka Irtenyev, of his first great grief, the loss of his mother, and and of his life with his grandmother in town.
The author was only twenty-four when his first work Childhood was published. His fine psychological analysis, the depth and freshness of his feelings, and the great critical power of Tolstoi`s realism ranks this short novel as one of the outstanding works of the great Russian writer.
