`Major Thomas Thorn was supposed to be a coward. The five men under him were supposed to be heroes. The woman they were guarding was supposed to be a slut. But in the burning heat of the desert, and in the searing crucible of combat, odds can change -- and so can people...` -- Back cover.
In 1958, Glendon Swarthout (1918-1992) published his first novel, The Came to Cordura, made into a feature film starring Gary Cooper and Rita Hayworth the following year. In all, six of Swarthout`s books would become films, the others being 7th Cavalry, Where the Boys Are, Bless the Beasts and the Children, The Shootist and A Christmas to Remember. Nominated twice for Pulitzers and once for an O. Henry, he earned two Silver Spur Awards for Best Western Novel (The Shootist and The Homesman), a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Western Writers of America (1991), and posthumous induction into the Western Writers Hall of Fame.

They were alone in the deserta motley crew commanded by an officer who had been branded a coward. But in the midst of the naked passions that erupted on his tense and terrible mission, and in the arms of a woman who had nothing more to lose, he found the strength to be a man.
