Marx, Proudhon and European Socialism – J. Hampden Jackson

THE KEY IDEA of this series, and what distinguishes it from any other that has appeared, is the intention—by way of a biography of a great man or woman—to open up a significant historical theme.

THIS BOOK
traces the development of the two currents that constituted the socialist movement in Europe: the collectivist, authoritarian current, which owes most to Marx, and the federalist, anarchist current, which is inseparable from Proudhon. The two men were as sharply contrasted in background and character as they were in ideas and methods. They met, tried to combine their forces, and inevitably failed. They played their parts in the Revolution of 1848 and made their contrasting contributions to its myth.

After Proudhon’s death, his followers were strong enough to frustrate Marx in the First International, and his tradition took root in France, Spain, and elsewhere. The Marxist tradition flourished first in Germany before its surprising translation to Russia. More than 150 years after the birth of Proudhon, the socialist movement still bears the marks of the rival traditions. While it would be difficult to point to any figure who has had as great an influence on the modern world—in politics and thought—as Marx.

J. Hampden Jackson studied history at Christ Church, Oxford, and is now Senior Staff Tutor of the Cambridge University Board of Extra-Mural Studies. His other publications include a biography of Jaurès and Clemenceau and the Third Republic in this series.

London. 18 cm. 192 p.

STANJE KNJIGE:

SUSEDNE ZEMLJE I INOSTRANSTVO:
