BIRKETT Norman
The Newgate Calendar and New Newgate Calendar
Folio Society, 1993.
Reissue. 2 vols boxed set. 8vo. Original gilt lettered cloth-backed decorated paper-laid boards (Fine), slipcase (VG). Pp. 259 + 265, illus with b&w plates (no inscriptions).
The Malefactor’s Register. Edited and Selected by Sir Norman Birkett. Originally a monthly bulletin of executions, produced by the Keeper of Newgate Prison in London, the Calendar’s title was appropriated by other publishers, who put out biographical chapbooks about notorious criminals such as Sawney Bean, Dick Turpin, John Wilkes and Moll Cutpurse.
THE NEWGATE CALENDAR + THE NEW NEWGATE CALENDAR
These two collections of notorious trials include accounts of legendary criminals such as Dick Turpin and Jonathan Wild (hero of Fielding’s novel), alongside grisly tales of lesser-known villains such as Half-Hanged Smith and the bigamist Catherine Jones, who was acquitted upon the discovery that her first husband was a hermaphrodite.
The Newgate Assizes saw cases as tragic as that of the Tolpuddle Martyrs and as gruesome as those of Burke and Hare. They provide a compelling panorama of honour, tragedy, and macabre humour, as well as an unrivalled social portrait of the time.
Two volumes in a single slipcase.
Selected and edited by Norman Birkett.
Contemporary engravings.
