Andreas Ernst has mixed opinions about this book. On the one hand, he certainly appreciates the risky construction van Gent chose for this book by putting together reports from two civil wars `alternating` in one book. According to Ernst, the fact that van Gent did not fail is due to `his qualities as a reporter`, his on-site research and also his cautious moral judgments (for example when he points out that perpetrators and victims often show a great closeness to one another). The reviewer is less satisfied with van Gent`s criticism of the media coverage of the wars. Here the author limits himself too much to the behavior of journalists, although Ernst would have found it much more interesting to examine the tendency towards ever shorter and faster `news`. In the reviewer`s opinion, the `effects of relevant war reporting` also deserved more attention here. In addition, Ernst criticizes that the author too often speaks anonymously about “the world,” “the West,” “the USA,” where more differentiation would be appropriate. Overall, however, he praises Gent`s reports as `excellent`.
