A City Under Siege: Tales of the Iran-Iraq War
Habib Ahmadzadeh

Knjiga je nova, u celofanu.
Tvrd povez.

Before reading this book it is a good idea to try and get some grasp of the Persian Language. Take a look at the Wikipedia entry on it or do a Google-search on `poetic Persian phrases.` You see, Persian is a language that is quite poetic and in reading this book one needs to always remember that. Additionally, it is a good idea to read the translator`s notes to get a fuller understanding of some of the details described in the stories within.

This book isn`t a historical account of the fighting from the point of view of a third person narrator, instead it is a series of stories told in a nearly stream of consciousness fashion. They tell about the war from the micro level. They are the little stories, the small things. They are also deeply ironic and run the spectrum from dark to humorous. The first story is filled with gripping suspense as a forward observer attempts to kill a walking Iraqi by means of an artillery shell which was originally acquired by the Iranian military from an Iraqi dud. The last story, is perhaps the most heartbreaking, where a mother looses three of her sons to the war and there is a mix-up with the body of the last son.

This book offers Americans a glimpse into the Persian soul and offers a look at the experiences of the other nation that fought a vicious war with Iraq. It is really high class literature and these stories should be included in a college short story anthology.
