Decorative title page. Published 12 years after the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp, this poignant Polish monograph is illustrated throughout with 34 photographs reproduced in striking b/w photogravure, as well as 4 lithographic illustrations in black and purple by Polish artist Włodzimierz Buczek.

While most of the photographs were taken shortly after the camp was liberated by the Red army (January 27, 1945) as they show piles of corpses, crematoria ovens still in working order, piles of shoes and clothing, as well as prosthesis, some must have been taken by the Nazis themselves, as they depict inmates at work, and others stripped naked and about to be murdered. A few photographs show the state of the abandoned camp at the time of the book`s publication.
