Dinah Brooke - Love Life of a Cheltenham Lady
New English Library, 1972
stanje: vrlo dobro
Miranda, an Oxford graduate, drifted into marriage with Louis, an attractive American actor, because she had nothing better to do an because she was expecting his child.
But beneath her cool exterior lie the seeds of deep sexuality; alone in a holiday villa in Tuscany she meets a bitter and unsuccessful Italian actor who releases this tremendous sexual energy within her.
Their affair is a corrosive mixture of desire and contempt and leads to a painful and searing climax where Miranda becomes an agent of death.
This Cheltenham lady is into the Lady Chatterley syndrome: gentlewoman`s sexuality awakened by uninhibited lover. Miranda moons around, Oxford after graduation, her libido so detached she feels remote even while being deflowered by an American studentActor, (“I suppose I ought to stroke his hair.”) Pregnant after this single encounter, she marries the actor, toward whom her disinterest verges on autism. Later, when she is temporarily left alone, she leaps into a bone‐jarring affair — this time, with an Italian actor —that shakes loose her badly assembled psyche in a paroxism of guilt and fear.
Their passions notwithstanding, Miss Brooke`s characters seem a bloodless lot. The author makes things worse by screening them with an ornamental prose that keeps them at arm`s length.
