Sidonie Gabrielle Colette - The Other Woman
Signet, 1975
143 str.
meki povez
stanje: dobro
Foreword by Erica Jong.

This volume brings together for the first time in English a collection including a series of stories and a novella, formed of a group of linked autobiographical pieces first published posthumously in France as Mon Amie Valentine.

Sidonie Gabrielle Colette, the grande dame of modern French literature, was revered for her highly personal style of fiction-she did not simply write about her characters. she lived with them. Here, in a posthumously published novella My Friend Valentine, is vintage Colette: Valentine. a conventional woman of fashion, clashes with a free-spirited actress named Colette, revealing differences in attitude between the two women that are as pertinent to today as to 1912. Here also are 19 short stories, available in English forthe first time. Set in the early twenties. when the motorcar was changing life and short hairstyles forwomen had revolutionized the feminine image.these stories are superb examples of Colette`s economy of language and subtle insights into her characters-especially the women. Translated by Colette`s biographer, Margaret Crosland, into spare. elegant English. the stories in The Other Woman are memorable vignettes of human experience from a timeless writer. `Colette`s work has particular relevance to us now because it tells the story of a soul`s quest for liberation- not political liberation but spiritual. because it is extremely modern in its aims and techniques-subjective writing which seems artless and utterly natural, but is really full of invisible artistry. because it asks all the questions which our generation sometimes flatters itself it has invented` -Erica Jong
