65433) LAMBORGHINI URRACO & THE V8s , Jean Francois Marchet , Osprey Publishing 1983
Urraco, Bravo, Silhouette, Athon, Jalpa ;
Lamborghini have never done things by halves, if a V12 cylinder engine is too big for a `small` car, then let`s build a `small` dual overhead cam V8, one can hear them saying. Let`s mount it mid-engine in aswoopy wedge-shaped bodyshell, give it Lotus-like roadholding and go after those Porsche 911 and Ferrari Dino (and Maserati Merak) customers.
With a Lamborghini....
Hence the Urraco and the rest.
Lamborghini`s first V8 was the P250 (or 2.5 litres) Urraco. Its looks were stunning but it needed more development, both in power output and build quality. Very slowly, but very surely, that`s what it got, in spite of the company`s political ups and downs. The engine went to a full 3 litres, and there was a 2 litre for tax-purged Italy. Along came the show cars, on the one hand, and the `new` production cars on the other. The show Bravo took the closed wedge shape further than ever before, the Athon did it open. The Silhouette became a sort of targa-top Urraco, it looked even better and ran like the wind. Everything was coming right. The Jalpa went further still, with 3.5 litres and promises even more for the customer.
From its first beginnings in 1970 the V8 Lamborghini has been an underdog. It is no longer. This is the first book on the subject specialising in the detail of the cars` development. Virtually all the photographs are previously unseen. In short, this book has everything a Lamborghini fan could wish for, except, perhaps, a set of ignition keys tucked inside.
