Recognizing, in the words of editor Raphael Stern, `that not only diverse theories and assumptions are needed for a complete picture of the development of the self,` `Theories of the Unconscious and Theories of the Self` brings together the insights of psychoanalysts, philosophers, and researchers who wrestle with the notions of the unconscious and the self in different but frequently complementary ways. Although the contributors to this collection generally share a common appreciation of a developmental perspective—a recognition of the centrality of the notion of history to the constitution of the self—they otherwise diverge in their conceptual strategies for demarcating the self, focusing, variously, on the self from the point of view of meanings, from the point of view of interventions, and from the point of view of emotions. Likewise, they differ in their conceptual location of the unconscious, focusing, variously, on emotions, intuition, imagination, object relations, and the data gleaned from empirical studies. That these approaches are not incompatible, that they can jointly subserve an interdisciplinary research program at once unified and unifying, is one of the promising outcomes of this project.
