One of Australia`s greatest writers, Judith Wright was born in Armidale, New South Wales, in 1915.
Her first book of poetry The Moving Image was published to wide acclaim in 1946. Among her other books of verse are Woman to Man and Five Senses. Her Collected Poems appeared in 1994. She recorded her family history in The Generations of Men (1959) and The Cry for the Dead (1981). She also wrote short stories, children`s fiction, literary criticism and essays.
Judith Wright won many honours and awards for her writing, including the Grace Leven Prize, the New South Wales Premier`s Prize, the Asan World Prize for Poetry and the Encylopaedia Britannica Literary Prize. In 1992 she became the first Australian to receive the Queen`s Medal for Poetry. She was for many decades a passionate environmentalist and activist for the rights of Aboriginal people. She died on 25 June 2000.
