INTRODUCTION
Many months ago a book called Guilty Men made its appear- ance on the bookstalls and the street barrows. The book won a certain fame, or rather notoriety, largely owing to the reckless and wanton nature of the charges which it contained against several prominent public figures. Indeed, the phrase Guilty Men has now entered into the general coinage of English speech, a fact which must be deplored by all those with some regard for the requirements of FAIR PLAY. Cassius, unlike his predecessor Cato who wrote the previous volume, holds that anyone assumed guilty of having assisted in the unleashing of world war has the right to state his case and to speak for himself. In the case of Mussolini it is clear that an unforeseen accident might at any moment deprive him of the chance of vindicating himself before a public tribunal. This volume has, therefore, been compiled with the purpose of ensuring that justice is done. All the essential statements attributed in its pages to the various witnesses are genuine, and may be corroborated from the newspaper cuttings at the time. None of the chief characters are fictitious. Some, even, have been raised from the dead to participate in the pro- ceedings and to ensure that no relevant evidence is omitted.
The writing of a report of a trial before it takes place obviously involves many difficulties. Lawyers will certainly find the pro- cedure strange and irregular. This failing, it is hoped, will be excused on account of the strict standard of historical accuracy which Cassius has resolved to sustain.
