`Meet My People - Indian Folk Poetry` By Devendra Satyarthi

MEET MY PEOPLE takes you to every comer of India, and introduces you to the valuable heritage of the Indian people in their intimate perspectives. The book takes you much further to the Indian people`s modes of life, their ceremonies, festivals, customs and their ideas, as reflected in their folk-songs. Every glimpse has been enhenced by the sympathy and understanding. The appreciation of traditional imagery and the living intimacy of details is significant and enchanting. Symbolic interpretation of the life and ethnic history of each group of people, with its own language or dialect, as a medium of expression, makes us confident of the people and their culture.

Folk-songs of India, in English renderings, project a representative anthology, with its capacity to portray unity in diversity.

About The Author
Born in 1908 in the Punjab at Bhadaur in Sangroor District, Devendra Satyarthi is a well-known author of over fifty books in Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi.

Rabindranath Tagore visualised in Satyarthi `the gift of a sensitive imagination`. Mahatma Gandhi, reforming to Satyarthi`s long travels all over India in search of folksongs, appreciated his `dignified persistence`.

W.G. Archer, commenting on the tremendous upsurge of national feelings in the 1920`s in India, observed that it inspired Davendra Satyarthi to undertake his famous journeys for over twenty years, in which he would set off `with hardly a rupee and hitch-hike from village to village all over India, coaxing peasants to sing their songs. In this way he collected over 3 lacs of songs`.

indija, indijska narodna poezija

DEVENDRA SATYARTHI was born forty-two years ago in, a village in the. Punjab, where he was enamoured by folk-songs. While a second-year student in a college at Lahore in 192^ he gave up his studies and left for Kashmir on a quest of songs. This journey left a deep impression on his mind and he decided to go about as a gypsy in the length and breadth of India. He came in close contact with Rabindranath Tagore, who wrote, “Devendra Satyarthi has evidently the gift of a sensitive imagination that has helped him to do his work so thoroughly because he has enjoyed doing it,” His work was greatly appreciated by Mahatma Gandhi, Who wrote, “The dignified persistance of Devendra Satyarthi made me peep into his remarkable collection of the songs of the Provinces he has been travelling in. They are the literature of the people.” He travelled extensively in India, Burma and Ceylon,- Where modern `means of transport were not available, he travelled on foot or occasionally on the old-styled bullock-cart. In ` 1948 he joined the Publications Division of Government of India at Delhi as an editor and has been editing Ajkal, the journal of art and letters..

Meet My People is the result of Devendra Satyarthi’s twenty years of long journeys in quest of India’s folk-songs. He wields his pen with charm and facility. As; . an authority on Indian folk literature his name will pass into history, for he takes his readers to the sources of folk art. His method as a translator of folk-songs is at. once scientific. He has been faithful to the originals, and at the same time his versions maintain the delicacy of Indian folk poetry.
